CEN

CEN is a major provider of European Standards and technical specifications. It is the only recognized European organization according to Directive 98/34/EC for the planning, drafting and adoption of European Standards in all areas of economic activity with the exeption of electrotechnology (CENELEC) and telecommunication (ETSI). The Technical Committees (TC) are responsible for the drafting of European standards in well-defined sectors.

The objectives of CEN/TC 187 are to contribute to the elimination of technical barriers to trade and to facilitate the internal European Union market for refractory materials. In particular, the aim is to establish standards to characterise refractory materials through classification and by determination of their chemical and physical properties. Through the liaison with ISO/TC 33 the aim is to give standards an international diffusion and thus develop further the global market.

CEN/TC 187 has developed a portfolio of standards for physical properties and general chemical analysis, and is continuing to develop standards on classification and test methods, which are considered basic to the sector. The current Chairperson of the CEN/TC 187 is Prof. Krause employee of the FGF on a part-time basis and professor at the University of Applied Science, Hochschule Koblenz.
